Jackson

According to the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision in the case of Roe v. Wade, the right to abortion is a fundamental constitutional right of every woman. Despite this, it is estimated that individual states have passed more than a thousand regulations since 1973 aimed at limiting or even eliminating abortion altogether. In her documentary, Maisie Crow follows the legal battle to save the only active abortion clinic in the state of Mississippi. It focuses primarily, however on the intersecting and fates of three women: the director of the abortion clinic, a pro-life activist and April, a young mother of four from the poor suburbs of Jackson. In this unique portrait of the South of the United States, Crow avoids black-and-white judgments and shows the complexities of life in a place where, like perhaps nowhere else, human destiny is determined by factors like race and class.
