There is little else that causes political controversy like the human body.
The degree of social control over our bodies is of interest to the authorities and the clergy; all sorts of experts, especially in the fields of medicine and law; anthropologists and sociologists; human rights theorists and defenders; and, in practice, each and every one of us.
The actual patterns of our culture are best revealed by looking at phenomena such as the medicalization of disability or public health policy, as well as emancipatory movements related to gender and sexuality.
The excellent documentaries in the festival’s repertoire section The Body Under Control deal with all these subjects and more. It is precisely the intersection of human rights with medicine and bioethics that evokes the greatest emotions. It is a source of social tensions, being experienced also in Poland, and a source of compelling human stories that are of interest to documentary filmmakers.
